I sat in a cafè
On Father's Day.
I wept for my heart
I wished it wouldn't start
The worst day of the year
For me, a day to fear.
The day of the father -
The one who couldn't bother
The one who died
And lied
Just before his soul
Vanished up his hole.
And lied and lied
Until his brain was fried
And he lied his way to a coffin
A painful grin
Smeared upon his face
In his own disgrace
I wished it were so -
His grave to mow
But I wept in the cafè`
On Fathers Day
For not once, did he have a
Children's Day .

I like this poem although it is a sad poem. I like this because it really shows the writer's wish and his feelings. on Father's Day, the writer's father passed away, just because of this sad matter, he wrote a poem to comemorate his father. He waited for his father's arrival at a cafe but he did not turned up. He described his sadness and his father's condition very well and I was touched by the writer's feelings.
The poem seems more cynical than your interpretation, Jayson. He talks about how his father "lied" and was a "disgrace" and that his soul "vanished up his hole." These are not happy memories that he has of his father.
ReplyDeleteBut right there: "Just before his soul / Vanished up his hole" is personification, applying active traits like vanishing to a soul. Also, "A painful grin / Smeared upon his face."
Think a bit more about the figurative language in this poem.
